Learn About Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare, very serious skin disorder that is most often caused by a reaction to medication. The earliest symptoms are typically flu-like, including fever, sore throat, fatigue and eye irritation.

As the disease progresses, a red or purplish rash often appears on the skin and begins to spread and blister. This rash causes the outer-most layer of skin to die and shed from the body, usually just a matter of days after the rash appears.

SJS cases require immediate medical attention and hospitalization. Treatment focuses on removing the cause, caring for wounds, controlling pain, preventing infection, and minimizing complications as the skin regrows.

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) is a more advanced, severe, and life-threatening form of SJS. When over 30% of the total body surface area is covered in blisters or significant rash, medical experts identify the reaction as TEN. Because of it’s comparative severity, toxic epidermal necrolysis can take weeks or even months to recover from.

TEN is serious and life-threatening.  Leading medical experts have stated that TEN carries a mortality rate of 30%-80%. This alarming mortality rate coupled with the horrible symptoms make this syndrome a nightmare for those who suffer from it. This is just one more reason our team exhausts so much effort to remain the most trusted Stevens Johnson Syndrome attorneys in the U.S.
